HRM Ferries

Halifax Regional Municipality operates three modern ferries in Halifax Harbour that are used for transporting passengers between Halifax and Dartmouth.  These ferries run on an almost continuous schedule and therefore must be in top operating condition.  This requires a dedicated maintenance schedule.

HRM trusts the people and services of Lunenburg Shipyard with their vessel maintenance needs.  The ferries are transferred to the company's facilities in Lunenburg by experienced professionals.  The sophisticated drive system consists of two (2) Voith Schneider propulsion systems which Lunenburg Shipyard rebuilds and maintains according to the manufacturers specifications.

Other services provided to HRM Ferries include surface preparation and painting of the steel hull and topsides as well as the aluminum superstructure.  Midlife repairs such as fuel tank maintenance, steel shell plating replacement, dexotex deck system application, gelcoat seat repair, loading ramp hydraulic maintenance, fire suppression system upgrades, electronic upgrades and engine maintenance are all completed on a tight schedule to minimize the time these ferries are out of service.
